Updates To The Technical Support Pages
We have done some updating our technical support and bulletin area. Type Approved Catalysts
European On Board Diagnostics (EOBD) is a system that electronically monitors, records and displays emission related faults. EOBD is compulsory on all petrol engined vehicles built since 2001 and all diesel engines built since 2004. They typically use two lambda sensors per catalyst to monitor emission performance.
New exhaust catalyst legislation is due to come into effect on January 1st 2009. Type Approval (TA) is a European wide manufacturing standard that demands OE matching quality and performance for replacement catalysts. A TA replacement cat has to meet, or exceed, OE standards for emission control and back pressure with no detriment to vehicle performance or fuel consumption.
Cheaper, non approved cats may not meet these standards of quality and performance and could be incompatible with EOBD. They may trigger the emissions warning light again even though it is a brand new cat. So how do you know that you have a type approved cat?
The new legislation demands that the unique approval code is roll stamped into the body of the cat, an adhesive label is not proof of type approval. Dont forget to check the replacement intervals on the lambda sensors as some need changing every 30,000 miles!
